Khushi Ladwa
My practice consists of working with Indian handmade techniques and processes, such as embroidery and printing. I am particularly interested in the contrast between hand and machine-made processes. Therefore, I aim to combine the two different processes through collage and layering. Growing up British Indian, my practice is a way for me to connect further with my background and culture. I am interested in the materials I use, for instance, the cultural significance of a sari or a type of women’s jewellery. I enjoy working with patterns, textures and vibrant colours that you’d find on traditional Indian garments, accessories and decoration. My work does not aim to replicate traditional art, instead I incorporate conventional techniques with contemporary perspectives. For example, I hand embroider motifs which may relate to an aspect of the everyday lives of people in India. Sometimes the work can be restaged as I am always experimenting with draping, folding, and pleating the textiles.
