Nina Schembri

I am a final year BA (Hons) Fine Art student at Nottingham Trent University. Being from Malta and having grown up by the sea, I am intrigued by the meditative feeling I get from reflections on water. I break down images of reflections into simpler forms to get a sense of fluidity without it being recognisable from the original image. I combine found and discarded items using traditional craft techniques, namely crochet and sewing, to reconstruct our preconceived knowledge of materiality, texture and the process of making. Once constructed, pieces are combined and removed repeatedly to create new compositions, constantly reincorporating older work to build a greater volume of objects to work from. Forming a false environment through a plastic nature. This is heavily inspired by Maria Nepomuceno, who creates these otherworldly installations that simultaneously feel alien and familiar. I hope to continue to explore and collaborate with other artists and expand my practice.
