I'm Marisa, a final year student studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design. My brand name is Jaktani Tulloch (pronounced Jak-tah-nee Tull-uh), a fusion of my Indian granddad's original surname and my Jamaican grandmother's maiden name. My design approach is driven by West Indian diaspora within Britain and exploration within my multi-ethnic heritage. I focus on easy to wear silhouettes and consider how clothing works in response to our body’s movements. Whilst researching into Jamaican dance styles throughout the decades, I formed a concept which celebrates the bold and joyful spirit West Indians brought to Britain. The title of my graduate collection, Nostalgic Union, is a recipe of happy memories and the act of coming together to form stronger relationships within our communities. I have designed this collection with intention of each garment representing a story. Each garment is a souvenir of good times which the wearer can embody and physically connect to their past through clothing.
