Esther Butler

I’m Esther, a final year BA (Hons) Fashion Communication and Promotion student. My work explores how trends evolve in a cyclical manner, merging old with new through zines, illustration, and digital design. I convey stories exploring alternative perspectives of what has shaped modern culture. Outdated zine is based around the word ‘homegrown’ in collaboration with TSPTR. The zine displays a 1960s room based on my childhood home containing outdated interiors on acetate layers, gradually removing all items. This highlights how we should appreciate outdated trends as a foundation for modern design. Outdated won multiple internal awards. Another project, Anonymity zine, explored the impact of social media on youths’ sense of identity, ultimately making subcultures become mainstream. I utilised artificial intelligence imagery to display a cynical future of media obsession in the digital era. After graduating, I hope to pursue a career in publishing and continue to raise awareness on current societal issues through print.
