My practice explores my relationship with my nanny, who travelled to Britain during the Windrush period. I create portrait paintings of Black people within my family and our community in order to embrace the importance of intergenerational relationships, whilst exploring themes of identity and memory through vibrant colours and patterns reminiscent of the Caribbean islands. I use the colours and patterns from nanny’s clothing and the plants from Jamaica to create screen prints that embrace the beauty of Jamaica’s natural scenery, alongside emulsion prints to highlight how our history makes us who we are today. It is important me to portray the beauty of my culture and there is an intention that my viewers resonate with my artwork which I hope leads them to reflecting on their own grandparents lives.
